Sarah Powell: School Of Pharmacy Takes On Italy (Part 3)

Siena Architecture.

The next morning we visited Siena, which is in the Tuscany region of Italy.

This city is marked by the medieval brick buildings throughout the town. We had a guided tour of the town and learned about the running of the horses (Palio di Siena), which is held once a year and is a big deal for the town.

Siena Cathedral.

We visited the Siena Cathedral, which I thought was one of the most unique buildings we visited due to the black and white striped interior. The town was filled with unique shops that you would not find anywhere else. I brought home numerous souvenirs from Siena.

Italian Steak Dinner.

We arrived in Florence later that night and decided to eat dinner near the hotel. We decided to try the steak, because it is the specialty in Florence. The dinner we had that night was the best on the trip. The steak was unlike anything I’ve ever had in the United States.

Overlooking Sienna!
Overlooking Siena!

The next morning, we decided to climb to the top of the Duomo, which overlooks the entire city of Florence. The inside of the Duomo was beautiful, but the views from the top cannot be beat. All of the rooftops in Florence are a burnt red color, and that was interesting to see.  After that, we went to the Academia to see David. David was so much larger than I was expecting. We look tiny next to it.

We ventured to the leather market and bargained with the vendors, which was a lot of fun. By the time we left the market, we were master hagglers. Later that night we went on the hunt for the best gelato place in the town, which was about two miles away from our hotel. It was a hike, but it was hands down the best gelato we had on the entire trip. So if you ever get the chance to go to Florence, I highly recommend stopping at Marco Ottaviano Il Gelato Gourmet.

The adventures continue tomorrow. Be sure to check back!
